How do you define the Goth style? First and most importantly, it’s about freely expressing your individuality. The Goth lifestyle is most popular among teens, but it is not uncommon for people in their twenties or even older to adopt it as well. The three main aspects of this style are clothing and accessories, hair, and make-up.
The most common aspect of clothing associated with Goth fashion is the use of all- or mostly-black outfits, usually combined with distinct accessories, such as fishnet or velvet tights and heavy pewter jewelry. Although black is still the most commonly used clothing color among Goths, dark or bright jewel tones are being used more often to contribute to the feel of punk rock, the subculture from with the Goth style originated.
Hair is an important part of Goth style. As the part of the body most easily adapted to style and expression, it has a lot of potential and can be worn in endless ways. Dyeing one’s hair or wearing a wig is common amongst Goths.
Colors vary widely, ranging anywhere from black to pink, but typically the hair is limited to a single flat color… or else a color that contrasts sharply with big highlights. Subtle is not a word to use in regards to Goth hair. What kind of hair styles will you see? You’ll see Mohawks, bobs, blunt cuts, angled cuts, and shaved heads. These hair styles are worn by everyone from men, women, boys, and girls.
Traditionally, Goth makeup has included a lot of black – black liquid eyeliner, dark mascara, and even black lipstick are often staples of the make-up kit for someone into Goth style. Men and women alike wear make-up to contribute to their originality. A white foundation or cheek color is often used to create contrast, and some Goths will add some color in the form of dark red lipstick or colored false lashes.
